For Jack Groat, working in broadband construction and technical field roles offer a tangible sense of fulfillment — the ability to actually see the real-world impact of his day-to-day efforts (see video below).
Groat recently competed at the SCTE Cable-Tec Games hosted in Atlanta, Georgia this year. The national competition brought together broadband technicians from across the country who had advanced from regional contests, where we spoke with several of the competitors on their experience in the industry.
Following the housing market crash in 2008, Groat found his passion for electrical trade work was flickering. "I was looking for something else," he told us. In his job search, Comcast was the first to call back.
Since then, Groat has held numerous roles in broadband, including field and service technician work, plant maintenance and construction. Across these many jobs, he has always been especially gratified by the perceptible rewards of working out in the field.
"I can drive down the road with my family and say, 'Yeah we built that.' There's something tangible to that." he said. "Also on the service side, there's a pride to: you go into a customer's house and you fix a problem [or] clean something up for them, that's a tangible product that you can say, 'I did this, I supported this, I helped build it, I fixed that issue.' Having that pride and being able to show people what you've done is very exciting."
